Save the Golden Lion Tamarin! The Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Program was created in 1983 to rescue, protect, and conserve the golden lion tamarins in their natural habitat. In 1992, the Program became the Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado (Golden Lion Tamarin Association) - AMLD, a Brazilian private non-profit institution that has as its mission the conservation of the Atlantic Forest biodiversity focusing on the long-term protection of the golden lion tamarin in its natural habitat. To save the golden lion tamarin from extinction, a viable population of at least 2,000 wild tamarins living on 25,000 hectares of protected and connected forests must be achieved by the year 2025. To address this challenge, AMLD, in partnership with many institutions, is working on conservation, management and sustainable use of the Atlantic Forest.
