Conservation milestones

The population of golden lion tamarins in the wild has increased from 200 to more than 1,200 individuals in the wild.

The species habitat under legal protection has increased 140% since 1974.

More than 100 rural properties are participating directly in the management, restoration and protection of golden lion tamarins and their habitat.

Based on the scientific knowledge we generate, we establish clear and measurable objectives for the conservation of lion tamarins in their natural habitat.

To multiply our forces, we have trained more than 250 students and professionals in conservation biology.

We have published more than 200 scientific articles in Brazil and internationally.

By integrating conservation actions and ecotourism, local community members are rescuing their history and culture, increasing their income, quality of life and self esteem.

The golden lion tamarin conservation program is a model for species and habitat conservation in Brazil demonstrating the importance of integrated management at the landscape scale.

Ecotourism has become the principal economic activity of 10% of the rural properties of the municipality of Silva Jardim, thus adding economic value to conserved forest.

Local municipal governments have created environmental education, forest restoration, and ecotourism programs.

80% of our technical staff are local community members.

Local communities are proud to have the golden lion tamarin in their region.

The golden lion tamarin is internationally recognized as a symbol of Atlantic Forest conservation.

The golden lion tamarin was reclassified in 2003, from critically endangered to endangered status.
